Missouri Auto Insurance

Missouri requires every driver to carry auto insurance with a minimum of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, and $10,000 per accident for property damage liability. It is also mandatory to carry uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. These numbers are considered not enough by some auto insurance companies and they highly recommend carrying coverage of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident for bodily injury liability and $100,000 for property damage liability. Take into consideration how many drivers will be on your policy and damages that can occur when choosing your coverage amounts.

Bodily injury liability will cover costs of the injuries or death of the other driver when you’re at fault in the accident, but it does not cover the injuries or death of you, your passengers, or anyone else on your policy. It will also cover any pain and suffering and lost wages the other driver sustains. In the event you need a lawyer to defend you in court for your accident, this coverage provides you representation from your auto insurance company.

Property damage liability covers damage you inflict to property that is not your own, be it someone’s car, fence, pole, guardrail, et cetera. Note that you should carry enough to cover any damages you could possibly cause. Any cost that exceeds your coverage amount will leave you paying the difference between the two numbers for the repairs out of your pocket. If you want coverage of your own vehicle in this instance, you will need to purchase collision coverage, a coverage not required by Missouri but is required by your bank if you have a loan on your car.

In the event you’re in an accident and the other driver, who is at fault, does not have auto insurance, uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage will pay the costs of you, passengers in your car, and any of your dependents’ medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of wages, and funeral expenses up to the limit you’ve purchased on your policy. If you do not have health insurance, this particular coverage is especially beneficial for you. It can be used in conjunction with your current health insurance to help pay for medical expenses of you and/or your dependents.

Missouri follows a tort auto insurance system. According to the law, in any accident, the at fault driver and their auto insurance is responsible to pay for all medical expenses, which can include pain and suffering and loss of wages of the driver and passengers in the other vehicle. Missouri does not honor the no-fault system.

Failure to carry auto insurance in the state of Missouri will result in heavy consequences. Your driver’s license may be suspended by the Department of Revenue for up to one year. To get out of suspension you must reinstate your license, which can cost from $20 to $400 depending on your number of offenses, and proof of current auto insurance.
