Maine Auto Insurance

Maine law requires a minimum of $50,000 per person for bodily injury, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 per accident for property damage liability for auto insurance. Uninsured/Underinsured motorist bodily injury limits are mandatory, in an amount no less than $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. A $1,000 minimum of Medical Payment coverage is required as well. Check with your auto insurance company by speaking to a representative so you understand the details of every coverage offered. All coverages are limited to any terms and liabilities of your specific auto insurance company.

If you are at fault in an accident, bodily injury liability will cover the other party’s injuries, death, loss of wages, and pain and suffering costs. However, it does not cover the injuries, death, loss of wages, and pain and suffering costs experienced by you or anyone else on your policy. In the event you are sued by the other party, this coverage will also cover the expense of your auto insurance company representing you in court.

When you cause accidental damage to another person’s property with your vehicle, property damage liability will cover the cost of repairing the damage done to all damaged property. It will also cover any legal costs that may ensue from the accident. Any additional costs exceeding your coverage amount could leave you paying for repairs out of pocket.

In the situation where you’re in an accident and the other driver, who is at fault, does not have auto insurance, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will cover you, passengers in your car, and any of your dependents for medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of wages, and funeral expenses up to the limit you purchased for your policy. If you do not have health insurance, this particular coverage is especially beneficial for you, along with the required medical payment coverage.

Your $1,000 medical payment coverage (or more if you so choose to purchase) will help cover the cost of care up to the amount you purchased for injuries sustained by yourself and/or by your dependents. The purchased amount can also go towards funeral costs. Medical payment coverage can be used in addition to your current health insurance benefits.

There are penalties for driving without proper auto insurance in Maine. You will be given a fine of between $100 and $500, and your license and vehicle registration can also be suspended. To get your driving privileges restored you must provide proof of current auto insurance to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Maine operates under a tort auto insurance system. This means by law of the state of Maine the at-fault driver in an accident and their auto insurance company are responsible to pay for medical expenses of both parties in addition to compensating for additional damages, i.e. pain and suffering and/or loss of wages. Take this law into consideration when deciding how much coverage you want to purchase for your auto insurance policy, making sure to protect yourself from having to pay a large sum out of pocket if you or one of your dependents are ever in this situation.
