Arizona Auto Insurance
Arizona requires every driver to carry auto insurance with a minimum of $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $10,000 per accident for Property Damage Liability. This is less than the requirements of other states, but it’s recommended by most auto insurance companies to carry more than these minimum amounts.
While other states require additional coverages such as uninsured motorist, comprehensive or collision, Arizona does not. However, you should look into and possibly add them to your policy to protect yourself and your assets in the event of any accident caused by you, your dependents, or an uninsured driver. Check with your auto insurance company to understand the details of coverages they offer. All coverages are limited to any terms and liabilities of your auto insurance company.
Bodily Injury Liability
If you are at fault in an accident, bodily injury coverage will cover the other party’s injuries, death, loss of wages, and pain and suffering costs. However, it does not cover the injuries, death, loss of wages, and pain and suffering costs incurred to you or anyone else on your policy. For that protection you will need Medical Payments coverage or health insurance. Bodily injury liability will also cover the expense of a lawyer (provided to you from your auto insurance company) to defend you in court if needs be.
Property Damage Liability
Causing accidental damage to another person’s property with your car, be it a car, fence, pole, walls, guardrails, etc, will be covered by property damage liability to pay for repair. It can also cover any legal costs that may ensue from the accident. As you decide how much coverage you want to purchase, keep in mind that any amount over your coverage amount could leave you paying the difference for repairs out of pocket. Property damage liability does not cover damages to your car. You will need to have collision coverage for that protection.
Arizona operates under a tort auto insurance system; it does not acknowledge the no-fault system. This means by law of the state of Arizona the at-fault driver in an accident and their auto insurance company are responsible to pay for medical expenses in addition to compensating for additional damages, i.e. pain and suffering and/or loss of wages. Take this law into consideration when deciding how much coverage you want to purchase for your auto insurance policy, making sure to protect yourself from having to pay too much if you’re ever in this situation.
Any time you are stopped by a traffic officer in the state of Arizona, you will be asked for proof of insurance and will be penalized if you are driving without it. Suspension of your driver’s license or of your vehicle registration may be instant if you’re caught without having auto insurance. These will require reinstatement fees and most likely costs to maintain an SR22 form for three years. Both of these consequences are expensive, so it’s better to purchase auto insurance and always have proof of it in your vehicle.
